# Role plays overview

> Put Candidates in a realistic work conversation with an AI character, then score how they did.

An AI role play is a live voice conversation between a Candidate and an AI character. You describe a real work situation, such as a discovery call, a frustrated customer, or a difficult feedback talk. The AI plays the other person and stays in role. After the call, the transcript is scored against the criteria you set.

Role plays show you how a Candidate handles a situation, not just how they describe it.

## Role plays and Interviewers

Role plays live on their own **Role Plays** page. They are not attached to an Interviewer. You can use one role play with Candidates from any Interviewer, and you can also invite people directly by email.

When you create a role play, you can link an Interviewer so the AI uses its job description as context. This only helps draft the scenario.

## Role play statuses

| Status | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Draft** | You are still building it. You can't invite Candidates yet. |
| **Published** | Live. You can invite Candidates. |
| **Archived** | No longer in use. |

## One attempt per person

Each person gets one attempt at each role play. Once someone is invited, they can't be invited to the same role play again. A Candidate can still take several different role plays.

If you invited someone directly by email, you can delete them from the role play's **Candidates** tab, unless their call is in progress. You can then invite them again.

## Credits

Each completed role play session uses 2 credits. You are charged only when the session is scored.

Sessions marked **Not scored** are free. A session is not scored when there wasn't enough to grade, for example:

* The call was too short to score.
* No conversation was recorded.
* The call ended because of a technical problem.
* The Candidate didn't engage with the scenario.

The Candidate can't retake a role play that was not scored.

## How scoring works

Each criterion is scored from 0 to 5, where 5 matches the strong answer you described and 1 matches the weak answer. The scores are combined using each criterion's weight into one score from 0 to 100.

* Criteria with a weight of 1 are informational. They appear in the report but don't count toward the score.
* There is no pass mark. You decide what to do with each result.

### Must-pass criteria

You can mark a criterion as **Must pass**. If the Candidate scores 2 or lower on it:

* The criterion is flagged in the report.
* The AI recommendation becomes **No**.
* The score itself doesn't change.

## Stages for Interviewer Candidates

When you add Candidates from an Interviewer, their stage changes as they go:

1. **Shortlisted for Role Play**: the Candidate has been invited.
2. **Role Play In Progress**: the Candidate has joined the call.
3. **Role Play Completed**: the call has ended and been graded, or marked as not scored.

Candidates don't move on automatically after a role play. You review the result and choose the next stage yourself.
